itsme joins EU digital identity pilots with WE BUILD Consortium

itsme is participating in the second phase of the large-scale pilots (LSPs) launched by the European Commission to test the feasibility of the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) framework*. The pilots aim to validate the framework through real-world applications across EU Member States.

As part of the WE BUILD consortium—which brings together 197 public and private sector entities from across the EU—itsme will contribute to strengthening the EUDIW ecosystem. The project is scheduled to begin in September 2025 and will run for 24 months.

"When we launched itsme 8 years ago, our goal was to create a digital identity solution that serves as a secure and seamless gateway, empowering citizens to interact effortlessly with both public and private entities,” said Wouter Vanderheere, Chief Growth and Financial Officer at itsme. “By combining ease of use with strong security and ensuring citizens retain full control over their data, itsme developed deep expertise that we're now bringing to the LSPs—enhancing their ability to deliver secure, user-centric solutions."

13 strategic use cases addressing key focus areas

The WE BUILD consortium has identified 13 strategic use cases within the context of the EUDIW that focus on applications related business processes, payments and supply chain management.

Leveraging its extensive expertise in secure identity verification and customer authentication, and with its strong track record of working with leading banks and payment networks, itsme will bring in its deep experience in the financial services industry. Specifically, we will explore secure and seamless payment processes, helping to shape use cases that enhance the overall payment experience.

With over 7 million users depending on our secure and user-friendly digital ID solution, itsme also brings valuable experience in balancing security and convenience. This blend of technical expertise and real-world implementation gives itsme unique insights into what makes digital identity systems truly effective—from a technological and a user experience perspective.

“As a digital ID company that is well-established in both the private and public sector, itsme® has experience in building and running a secure and sustainable digital identity platform for all industries. This is crucial, as the LSPs need to demonstrate not just technical feasibility, but also economic sustainability for all stakeholders—be it digital identity solution providers, data/wallet providers, or payment networks.” — Germonpré, Product Management Lead at itsme®.

itsme: Simplifying EUDIW compliance for businesses

Navigating the complexities of the EUDIW ecosystem can be challenging, with 27 EU Member States each of which implementing unique regulations and configurations. Organisations will consequently need to build and maintain separate connections with all national EUDIW wallets, requiring ongoing management and updates.

itsme simplifies this process by offering a single OpenID Connect (OIDC) interface that connects to the entire EUDIW ecosystem. Our unified solution manages eIDAS 2 requirements, including KYC, strong customer authentication, digital signatures, and secure data sharing. This enables businesses to focus on their core operations while ensuring compliance across all EU Member States.

* The first round of pilots had begun in 2023, running for two years until mid-2025. These initial pilots focused on testing the core functionalities of the European Digital Identity, while addressing key issues like privacy, security, and accessibility.
